Liatris Mixed. Picture courtesy Hadeco Liatris Mixed. Picture courtesy Hadeco These showy plants originate from about 35 species from eastern, north America.  They are grown for their purple or white flowers, in summer. They look rather like bottlebrushes. Plant them in groups in the flower border where they will make a bold statement. Liatris are excellent, long lasting cut flowers.

The corms will go dormant in winter and can be lifted and stored. Plant them in spring in full sun or semi-shade. Plant them 10cm deep and 8cm apart. They will grow +-75cm tall.

Liatris need well-composted soil that has good water retention. Water them well throughout the growing season, but keep them on the dry side in winter, if the corms are left in the soil. Plant them away from strong wind; otherwise it will be necessary to stake the flowers.

They can be propagated by division of the tuber, make sure that each segment has a visible growth point or eye.
